Tax Manager / Specialist

JKC is excited to announce the brand-new and unique position of Tax Manager / Specialist. Given the seasonality of the position, this is also an excellent opportunity for the right candidate to cross-train and support other aspects of the firm, including our auditing practice.

  • Assist clients with bookkeeping records to complete business tax returns and/or provide year- round accounting services.
  • Assist staff with accounting tasks on consulting clients.
  • Assist staff on tracking of confirmations and board letters on audit clients.
  • Communicate with clients across the country via telephone regarding tax matters.
  • Communicate with IRS and other tax authorities as an advocate on behalf of clients.
  • Organize, prioritize and manage multiple projects under tight deadlines throughout each day to assist in meeting all clients’ needs.
  • Knowledgeable about depreciation and fixed asset allocations, allowable business deductions and allocations, interest allocations, basis requirements, amended return preparations, NOL allocations, estimated tax projections and calculations, preparation of state returns, and the current tax law.

Audit cross training duties:

  • Prepare confirmations and board communication letters from all audits.
  • Follow up on all confirmations submitted and not received.
  • Footing financial statements.

Minimum qualifications:

  • CPA required
  • 4–6 years of experience
  • Proficient in QuickBooks
  • Strong accounting knowledge — able to review and assess books before preparing tax returns
  • Current on tax laws and familiar with all areas of taxation
  • Experience preparing the following returns:
  • Corporate
  • Partnership
  • Individual (including reviewing staff-prepared returns)
  • Not-for-Profit (Form 990) — both accounting and tax preparation
  • Tax planning experience
  • Experience with Trusts and Estates returns is a plus but not required
  • Prior experience with sit-down preparation of individual returns is a plus
  • Comfortable commuting into our office at Calumet City , this is also a full role
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Finance or Accounting
  • Technical expert knowledge of tax law
  • Ability to compile financial statements to prepare tax returns
  • A proven record of building profitable, sustainable client relationships
  • Strong analytical, organizational, written, and verbal communications skills
  • Experienced with Microsoft Office, QuickBooks, and tax return software

Preferred qualifications:

  • Certified Public Accounting licensure
  • Experience in preparing Personal, Corporate, S-Corp, Partnership, Estate tax returns, and Form 990 and all schedules of varying complexities
  • Proficiency in payroll, payroll taxes, accounts payable and accounts receivable, and knowledgeable about payroll related reporting, sales tax reporting and year end reporting requirements
  • Understanding of the process of compiling the balance sheet, profit and loss, general ledger, general journals, etc.

Senior Accountant, Consulting

John Kasperek Co., Inc. seeks an energetic Senior Accountant to work in a fast-paced, agile environment. The Senior Accountant will provide timely, high quality client consulting services to meet their wide range of needs. The Senior Accountant will deliver disciplined internal controls guidance to clients to reduce fraud risk, as well as assisting with grant compliance, budget analysis, customized reporting to Boards and Committees, and much more.

The Senior Accountant must have a minimum 3 years of experience working in a governmental accounting capacity and will perform the following duties:

  • Develop an understanding of the client's needs and expectations
  • Develop sufficient technical knowledge to perform consulting tasks specific to the client and work independently as needed
  • Lead Associates through the consulting process, including bookkeeping, payroll, internal controls, budgeting, and coordinating related deliverables with external auditors
  • Review substantive and analytical procedures in assigned areas
  • Facilitate field work and monitor and report job time budget
  • Establish relationships and open lines of communication with clients to ensure proper coordination
  • Anticipate and address client concerns and communicate issues to manager
  • Understand and apply JKC’s consulting approach
  • Communicate control deficiencies to manager and the client
  • Identify performance improvement opportunities
  • Recognize and inform management of opportunities to increase types of services to clients
  • Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications, maintaining personal networks, and participating in professional organizations

Senior Accountant, Auditing

Key Responsibilities:

John Kasperek Co., Inc. seeks an energetic Senior Associate to work in a fast-paced, agile environment. The Senior Associate will provide timely, high quality client consulting and audit services that meet the needs of the clients. The Senior Associate will coordinate the auditing of all required financial statements, related disclosures, and other client deliverables. They are responsible for completing client engagements within budget and supervising one or more associates as necessary.

Senior Associates must have a minimum 3 consecutive years of experience working on governmental audits and will perform the following duties:

  • Develop an understanding of the client's needs and expectations and become a government industry specialist
  • Lead Associates through the audit process, preparing financial statements and related disclosures
  • Review substantive and analytical auditing procedures in assigned areas
  • Clearly and logically prepare and review workpapers
  • Prepare financial statements and footnotes
  • Facilitate field work and monitor and report job time budget
  • Establish relationships and open lines of communication with clients to ensure proper coordination
  • Anticipate and address client concerns and communicate issues to manager
  • Understand and apply JKC’s audit approach
  • Develop sufficient technical knowledge to perform consulting tasks for clients and work independently as needed

Associate

Key Responsibilities:

John Kasperek Co., Inc. seeks an energetic Associate to work in a fast-paced, agile environment. The Associate will perform routine, detailed accounting and tax services, as well as audit support services, under the supervision of a Senior Associate, Manager, or Partner. The Associate is expected to obtain an understanding of the work to be performed and the purpose of the work. They should consistently ask questions of senior personnel when uncertainty or confusion arise.

Associates range from college graduates to individuals with up to five years of experience in performing the following duties:

  • Develop the basic technical knowledge; emphasis placed on learning on the job as Associate is shifted from one job to another
  • Perform substantive and analytical auditing procedures in assigned areas
  • Prepare working papers which adequately document the tests performed and procedures followed to substantiate conclusions reached
  • Be alert to the proper and consistent application of accounting principles in performing audit procedures
  • Assist in the preparation of financial statements and footnotes
  • Identify and document control deficiencies or other matters that warrant the attention of management
  • Perform electronic submission of governmental audit-related information
  • Manage time within limits of budgets and provide real-time feedback to the immediate supervising person
  • Provide basic accounting, bookkeeping, and operational support to clients
  • Assist with reconciling various general ledger accounts; research discrepancies by working with the client to collect and analyze account information
  • Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications, maintaining personal networks, and participating in professional organizations
  • Maintain a successful working relationship with clients and handling issues with tact and poise
  • Engage in firm networking opportunities with clients and prospects

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Finance or Accounting

  • Plans in progress to complete the requisite 150 hours to be CPA Exam eligible

Preferred Qualifications:

Paid Intern

Key Responsibilities:

John Kasperek Co., Inc. seeks an energetic Intern to work in a fast-paced, agile environment. The Intern will perform routine, detailed accounting and tax services, as well as audit support services, under the supervision of senior professional staff. The Intern will gain valuable on-the-job experience including but not limited:

  • Shadowing members of the firm as they perform theirduties relating to tax, audits, and consulting work.
  • Assisting with research, filing, data entry, and recording and maintaining accurate and complete financial records.
  • Preparing financial reports, such as balance sheets and income statements, invoices, and other documents.
  • Working with bookkeeping software.
  • Working on a team to compile and analyze data, track information, and support the company.
  • Taking on special projects to learn more about accounting and office operations.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Must be a recent graduate or actively working towards a Bachelor’s or Master's in Accounting.
  • Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
